This month we're going to add Carlos Santana into our "Licks and Riffs of the Rockstars" course. He's an amazing player with great tone, technique, and rhythm. He's amazing, and someone whose style you definitely want to add to your repertoire! So let's get started!
Carlos Santana is a one-of-a-kind. No one else played like he did and people instantly noticed. As with so many players, it's not the note choice (not much harmony theory here!), it's his rhythm and his articulation that makes the difference.
He came to fame in the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s with his blues-influenced Latin rhythms, his blues-influenced melodic lines, and his thick thick sound. He's one of the players who can play a single note and you instantly know he's playing it!
We're going to start covering his riffs and licks this month. We have a couple of classic riffs (with the timing) and 4 licks in his style. The licks feature that cool, syncopated timing he uses as well as his Dorian Mode trademark notes. This is just the tip of the iceberg for Carlos!
